Cycle right we’re here with 5th 6th class pupils showing them how to check their bikes and helmets and clothing for safety before cycling. They also showed them the correct way to cycle in our Aisling Duggan car park and on the N60road to Ballinlough and back.
Please watch the video to show how your child should cycle, signal and look on exit from the car park at home time.

Investigate Woodlands Workshop
On Friday October 21st Rob Nelson from Green Schools facilitated an Investigate Woodlands Workshop with the children from Junior Infants to 4th class. The workshop was held in the grounds of our local GAA club, Michael Glavey's, where we found lots of trees to identify and learn about their importance. Rob showed the children how to estimate the age and height of a tree and every child sowed an acorn in a disposable coffee cup to bring home. Hopefully these will grow into oak trees!
Raising our 4th Green Flag for Travel
On Wednesday 25th May our whole school tuned in to an online presentation of our latest Green Flag to us from An Taisce. This is another huge achievement for our school. Thanks to our Green Schools committee and Mrs Horkan who worked very hard doing surveys on transport at our school, obtaining a grant to erect a bicycle shelter at our school, promoting our pupils to cycle to school and raising awareness about air pollution while also maintains the other three flags we already have. Here are images of us raising our new green flag for energy on the day. Our commitee raised the flag.

Today we created a human bar chart to visually display how our pupils travelled to school today. Enjoy the pictures below!!
Speed Survey for our Travel Flag
Our Green Schools Travel Officer Ciaran Hussey paid a visit to the school. He showed the pupils in 5th 6th class how to do a speed survey on the road outside our school. The pupils really enjoyed this and we all found the results of the traffic speed survey very interesting and shocking!
Carrick NS Green Schools Program
Today, Friday 8th October 2021, we planted a tree for National Tree Day. The eldest pupil in the school, Brihanna, dug the hole for the tree and the youngest pupil in the school, Lucy, planted the tree. The tree planted was a wild cherry tree donated to the school though the INTO teachers union and sponsored by SPAR. This was a lovely occasion to have all the pupils together and to discuss the the importance of planting a tree.
We said a lovely prayer together as a school group.
Please see the pictures below of the tree planting.

Cycling Lessons for our Transport Flag
5th and 6th class are currently receiving cycling lessons from Cycle Right company through the Roscommon Sports Partnership. This is part of our Green Schools Travel Flag which we are currently working on. Thanks to Mrs Horkan for organising these classes. The pupils had great fun cycling in our school yards and in the Aisling Duggan Car Park while also learning how to maintain their bikes and picking up some really important rules of the road for cyclists.
Water Flag initiatives
Our new water butt!
Pupils in 3rd class and 5th class pupils using the water from our water butt to wash the compost bins. All pupils in the school collect and clean the compost bins on a rota. The green schools committee decided to ask the board of management to purchase a water butt in order to save water. Well done to all our pupils and to Mrs Horkan the Green Schools Co-Ordinator on taking great water actions!
